On 19 July the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation came into full application, and the following day the European Commission's central Digital Product Passport Registry went live. The plumbing that will one day hold a digital record for physical products sold in Europe now exists and is running.
Before anyone reaches for a compliance panic, the clothing rules are not part of that. Textiles get their own delegated act, indicatively targeted for adoption in 2027, and because such an act cannot apply earlier than eighteen months after entry into force, mandatory passports for garments realistically arrive in 2028 or later. Your school's blazer does not need one. It probably will not need one for years. I am writing about it anyway, because the gap between the idea being live and the rules being live is exactly the window in which it makes a good lesson rather than a compliance briefing.
The exercise, in one lesson
Start with an object, not a slide. A school polo, a PE top, a blazer, whatever is nearest. Ask a simple question and let the class run at it: can we find out where this came from. Give them fifteen minutes and no other instruction. They will start with the label, which gives fibre percentages and a country of manufacture, and they will conclude fairly quickly that the country of manufacture is the country of sewing, not of growing. That realisation on its own is worth the lesson.
Then hand them a garment that carries a scannable code and let them follow it. What a passport is meant to hold is a chain: the field or the recycled feedstock, the yarn, the fabric, the production run, the certificates, the care instructions, the end-of-life route. Ask them to write down every step they can verify, and separately, every step they are being asked to take on trust. Those two columns are the whole subject.
The best result is a dead end
Teachers sometimes worry that the trail will run out and the activity will fail. The opposite is true. When a class hits a stage where the answer is not available at that level of detail, they have arrived at the actual state of the global textile industry, which is that provenance thins out the further upstream you go and honest systems say so. A record that admits a gap is doing something a brochure never does. I would spend the last ten minutes of the lesson on precisely that distinction: a claim with a record behind it, a claim that is self-declared, and a claim with nothing at all.
Where it fits on a timetable
Design and technology, most obviously, where material selection and product lifecycle are already on the specification. Geography, because a supply chain is a map with labour and water attached. Business studies, because this is a live case in regulation shaping cost and supplier behaviour, and pupils can argue both sides. It also works as a one-off with a mixed-age group, which is how I usually meet it, because the object does the heavy lifting and you do not need prior knowledge to hold a shirt.
One practical note. Do not build the lesson around the regulation itself. Dates move, and this one has moved before: the first delegated acts under the regulation slipped from late 2025 to mid-2026. Build it around the question the regulation is trying to answer, which is older and steadier. What is this thing, who made it, and how would I know.
Why I care about this one particularly
We built our own traceability the year my son reacted to his school uniform, several years before I had read a line of European ecodesign law. I wanted to know what was against his skin, and I found out how hard that was to establish even as someone who has spent twenty years in textiles and studied circular economy at Cambridge. If it was hard for me, it is not a reasonable thing to expect a parent to do at a checkout. It is, however, an excellent thing to teach a fifteen-year-old to do, because they will be buying clothes for the next sixty years and the label is not going to get more honest on its own.
