I want to start with the lint filter again, because it is the most direct piece of evidence any of us has about our own laundry. Everything in that grey mat used to be part of a garment. A dryer does not generate fluff. It removes it, from your clothes, load after load, and it is very good at it.
For a long time I treated the dryer as neutral. Washing was the thing that wore clothes out, drying was just what happened afterwards. That is not right. Drying combines the two most destructive forces we apply to textiles at home, sustained heat and continuous mechanical tumbling, and applies them at the same time to fabric that is already swollen and weakened from being wet.
What the damage actually is
Three things happen. Fibres break and are carried off as lint, which is the visible one. Elastic components degrade, which is why the waistband on a pair of school trousers goes slack long before the fabric fails, and why a polo neckline loses its snap. And cotton shrinks. Knitted cotton holds tension from the knitting process, and heat plus agitation lets it relax; tumble drying roughly doubles shrinkage compared with air drying. A jumper that no longer covers a wrist has not usually been outgrown. It has been dried.
The money is not trivial either. A University of Michigan study published in March 2025 estimated that switching to air drying saves in the region of 1,800 euros (2,100 dollars in the original) and over three tonnes of CO2 across a dryer's working life. That is a United States estimate at United States energy prices, so treat the euro figure as indicative. That is before you count the clothes you did not have to replace.
I know why the dryer exists
So let me not be sanctimonious about it. Uniform gets genuinely filthy. There are weeks in February when everything is damp, the flat has no outdoor space, and a PE kit has to be dry by half past seven tomorrow morning. When my children were small I used the dryer constantly and I would do it again. The argument is not that you should never use it. The argument is that the default should be reversed.
Living in Spain, we have an advantage worth using. For a good part of the year a rack on a balcony does the job overnight, and direct sun will also lift light stains from white shirts at no cost. Watch it with strong colours, since prolonged direct sun fades dye as surely as a hot wash does. Dry darks inside out or in shade.
If you are using the dryer anyway
Use the lowest heat setting, and accept that it takes longer. Take garments out while they are still slightly damp and hang them for the last twenty minutes, which is where most shrinkage and most of the creasing you then have to iron out actually happens. Do not dry a heavy pair of trousers in the same load as light polos, because the heavy items keep the cycle running long after the light ones are done. Shake each item out before it goes in. And clean the lint filter every single time, which improves airflow, cuts the run time, and gives you an honest weekly readout of how much garment you are losing.
Easy care is not the same as indestructible
We describe some of our Bellver pieces as easy care, and I want to be precise about what that means, because the phrase gets used loosely across this industry. It means the fabric is constructed and finished to release stains readily, to dry fast, and to come out of a low wash without needing pressing. It does not mean the garment is immune to a hot dryer. No cotton garment is. The single change that most extends the life of school clothes is not a special detergent or a finish, it is a drying rack, and I say that as someone who sells the clothes.
If you try one thing this term, hang the jumpers and the trousers and let the dryer have the towels. Those are the two items where shrinkage costs you a whole garment rather than a bit of comfort, and they are the two you were most likely to replace mid-year.
